Summary on Grant Application Form
1. Measurement of projectile impact behaviour of woven and non woven (z stitch) composite laminates. 2. Measurement of residual laminate properties after impact. 3. Study of effects of projectile velocity, projectile energy, laminate lay up and impact position. Penetration performance and damaged laminate residual properties will be measured. Specimens will be approx. 150 mm x 150 mm, and will be up to 16 mm thick. The effects of projectile velocity, projectile energy, laminate lay up, projectile geometry and position of impact will be studied. The effects of impact will be quantified in terms of area of delamination, through thickness positions of delamination, residual properties of beams cut from the damaged laminate and residual properties of the complete laminate. Failure plots will be developed to quantify penetration behaviour of various laminates with respect to projectile velocity, projectile energy and position of impact. Projectile velocities will be up to 500 m/s. Resins for laminates will be selected to reflect practice in the offshore industry. Specimens will be manufactured using hand lay up and resin transfer moulding techniques.
