The proposal forms a sequel to SERC Grant No. GR/F63688 which funded a research program into the development of an expert system for the assessment of hydraulic system integrity. This new proposal builds upon the results of the previous work using it as part of a much wider architecture aimed at providing a general facility for building diagnostic systems for arbitrary hydraulic circuit configurations.Such an extension requires the generation of new modules with the responsibility for system performance measurement, symptom extraction and recognition of abnormal system behaviour and finally diagnosis of the fault(s) in the circuit giving rise to the observable symptoms.These new modules will be developed to the same level of generality as the existing work.Symptom recognition will be achieved using neural networks, trained to distinguish abnormal system behaviour via exemplars provided by experimentally validated simulations of a number of circuits built with a reconfigurable test rig.Once symptoms have been established, the fault diagnosis module will use lists of candidates, generated a priority by the existing software, to target the fault localization process. A specially developed general model of component reliability, and any necessary circuit-specific heuristics, will then be used to obtain the final diagnosis.
