Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim is to construct a simple DMFC-SPE test cell to study long-term electrode and electrolyte behaviour, optimisation of methanol vapour concentration in the supply gas and removal of exhaust gases, and to act as a test bed for the development of good quality models for this type of DMFC. The results of this work will be used in the modelling, design, construction and electrical testing of a small direct methanol fuel cell stack, consisting of approximately 20 bipolar cells of active area 300 cm2 in series giving a power output of ca. 250 W. This unit will be used to study the dynamic response of the system to demand, the effects of build up of CO2 on stack performance, the control of stack temperature and the engineering of proper heat 2 transfer from the stack to the methanol vaporiser.
