Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is a development of a highly successful interaction and cooperative effort between the present applicants and a group in the Department of Mathematics, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and is complementary to a parallel proposal submitted by that group. Both also involve ICI, Westlands, British Aerospace, Ministry of Defence, University of Limerick and University College, Galway. The proposed research is focused on dimensional stability and residual stress in formed composites, with particular reference to the effect of rapid cooling and temperature gradients and the resulting moving phase boundaries during cooling. Also included are viscoelastic effects in uneven cooling and consequential residual stress and distortion, and creep and residual/stress relaxation in post-forming heating and loading. The overall objective is to be able to make quantitative predictions of dimensional changes and residual stress in formed laminates.
