Summary on Grant Application Form
The major advances in the science and technology of bulk polymers have not been effectively transferred to coatings for reasons that include the limitations of the existing processes of painting and powder coating. The proposal is directed at developing a radically different method, plasma spraying, for the production of high-performance polymer coatings; specifically at investigating plasma spray deposition as a means of producing thermoset and composite coatings and facilitating deposition onto polymer substrates. The proposal builds on previous research undertaken by the applicants which showed that thermoplastic coatings can be successfully plasma sprayed providing certain critical parameters are adequately controlled. It also indicated exciting opportunities for the manipulation of properties by the control of formulation and deposition parameters.
