Summary on Grant Application Form
The primary objective is to develop cost-effective designs of high-speed linear electric actuating drives for use on feeding systems on machinery used predominantly in the packaging industry, but which will find wide application in other market sectors. The target specification is to achieve controlled velocies of 4m/s and accelerations in excess of 2g, with a repeatable displacement accuracy of 25 microns over strokes ranging from 0.2m to 2.0m with a continuous duty cycle. Alternative actuator types and topologies will be considered, and advances in relevant technologies, especially in relation to new materials, will be exploited.
