Summary on Grant Application Form
An experimental and theoretical investigation of vibration suppression devices in pipeline systems is proposed, using both structural and hydraulic techniques. The work is a natural development of previous work with outstandingly good agreement between measurements and theory. Detailed measurements will be made in an existing apparatus, suitably modified to accept alternative suppression devices. The measurements will include sufficient redundancy to enable the characteristics of the devices to be ascertained accurately. The effects of the devices will be simulated numerically using methods already shown to be capable to modelling fluid/structure coupling with high accuracy. All measurements and numerical predictions will be in the time domain, providing optimum conditions for the software validation. However, special attention will also be paid to interpretations of the data in the frequency domain because this is where fluid/structure coupling is potentially most important. Existing methods of analysis fail to predict resonant frequencies satisfactorily.
