This research project will be a joint cooperative venture between the University of Bath and GEC Alsthom Protection & Control, the UK's leading manufacturer of power system protection equipment. The broad purpose of this project is to research techniques that will enable digital distance relay technology to be applied to circuits composed of , or containing significant sections of , underground cable. The fundamental basis for this work will be the research into a numerical faulty impedance calculation algorithm that takes account of the cable shunt capacitance. It is likely that this algorithm will recognise the distributed nature of transmission line parameters and will, thus, solve for the fault impedance over a range of frequencies determined by the power system transducers. Further algorithmic research will identify a supporting relay fault evaluation strategy that can take account of the non-homogenous nature of circuits composed of both line and cable sections. This is of particular importance in the case of earth faults. Finally, prototype relay hardware will be developed and realistically tested to prove the feasibility of the new distance algorithms.
