Summary on Grant Application Form
Research funded by a previous SERC grant (Ref. GR/F62971) has shown that significant improvements in the speed of simulation of hydraulic systems can be achieved through parallel processing. This proposal is concerned with an extension of the work with the aim of achieving real-time simulation of complex systems. One of the aims is to develop an automatic partitioning scheme to provide effective load balancing of the processors. This is a non-trivial task if the scheme is to accommodate arbitrary circuit configurations. In addition, the existing fixed-time-step transmission-line modelling technique will be extended to assess the benefits of a variable-time-step scheme. Some work has already been undertaken on this approach as part of SERC grant GR/F62971.Another aim of the work is to provide a real-time reference model for condition monitoring and (potentially) adaptive control of complex systems. Studies will be undertaken to examine the feasibility of employing the reference model as part of a parameter identification scheme for condition monitoring purposes. This will entail interfacing the computer system to example hydraulic circuits already available in the Fluid Power Centre laboratories.
