It is proposed to measure drop sizes, velocities and gas phase turbulence characteristics in vertical and inclined annular two-phase flow. The first of these will use a laser diffraction technique whilst all parameters will also be measured using laser anemometry. Initially, tests will be carried out on an air water facility in the Department of Chemical Engineering using 20 mm and 38 mm diameter tubes. This work will be supplemented by tests on a kerosene/aqueous zinc chloride facility using 65 mm diameter tubing. The latter tests will be confined to the vertical. The tests will concentrate on that part of the annular flow region close to churn flow, which is both an area of industrial interest and where there are still some unresolved differences in existing data. The results will be used to place current models for annular flow onto a firmer footing. It is also intended to extend them to cope with non-vertical cases.
