Summary on Grant Application Form
The effect of acoustic standing waves (ASWs) will be investigated to determine the extent to which vapour deposition coating can be influenced. The ASWs will be made to interact with both the gaseous phase and the substrate during coating. For the low vacuum phase, ASWs will be excited as linear stria between parallel plate transducers. The effect of ASWs on coatings deposited onto substrates would be studied and the effect of frequency, power and the dimensions of the ASW region will be studied. The coherence of the geometrical patterns and their dependence on the position of the ASW will be of special interest. Similar studies will be made for other coating patterns induced by transducer arrays such as a circular ring or tube. For the solid substrate phase, correlation of the ASW parameters,ie frequency, intensity and the mode within the solid (bulk, surface, Lamb, Rayleigh and shear wave) with the magnitude of their effect on deposition will be studied. Studies will be made on the efficacy of shaped arrays as above. An UHF signal and ultrasonic generating source will be developed, capable of working in coating systems or being coupled into them at frequencies up to 1GHz.
