The aim of the programme is to build a small scale demonstration unit for the separation of oxygen from air using a multiplate Dense Oxygen-ion Conducting Ceramic Membrane (DOCCM) unit. The unit will consist of 10 ceramic plates of a mixed oxygen/electronic conductor of size 10 cm x 10 cm and thickness > 10 m. These plates will be constructed into a unit capable of separating 1 litre/min of pure oxygen from air when operating at a temperature in the region of 500C.The first year of the programme will be concerned with materials selection and optimisation using isotope exchange measurements. The remaining two years will be concerned with the construction, first of all of single membrane units to measure fluxes predicted from the isotope experiments, followed by the construction of a multi-membrane unit to produce the target oxygen flow of 1 litre/min.
