1. Development of an electric arc model with flexible boundary conditions 2. Analysis of a) radiative emission form the arc, b) Cathode flow and stability conditions and c) Electric arc stability conditions with a view to optimal design and operation of a hyperbaric arc. (1) Different electric arc models will be compared to provide a better understanding of the physical conditions that determine arc structure and which could result in the development of a flexible hybrid model based on firm physical principles. (2) The calculation of the radiative emission from the electric arc will be carried out along the lines of a related calculation for the radiative emission from the keyhoe in laser welding. (3) In the mathematical modelling of flows of shielding gas in an electric arc in the neighbourhood of the cathode, the usual procedure is to fix suitable boundary regions in that region. In this project, a more complete description of the flow starting upstream of the cathode will be provided. (4) The stability analysis of the electric arc will be carried out using the methods outlined in the book Hydrodynamic stability, by P. Drazin and W. Reid, CUP, 1981.
