Summary on Grant Application Form
1. To characterise the fatigue characteristics of structural adhesives and their performance with thick steel adherends in appropriate joints for marine structures. 2. To provide design guidance for situations in fatigue dominated structures where adhesive bonding may be used to advantage as a substitute for welding. Five tasks have been identified. (1) An assessment of the fatigue performance of three types of adhesive. (2) Bonded joint performance will be examined. (3) Stress levels, stress concentrations, stiffness and fracture characteristics will be assessed by numerical modelling. (4) Using the results of the tasks in (1) (3), it will be possible to correlate both mode and rate of fatigue failure of particular joint geometries with overall applied loading and material performance. (5) By combining the information from (4) with estimates of the uncertainties in both material performance and loading appropriate to typical marine structures it will be possible to provide a preliminary reliability based design and assessment scenario in which the uncertainties in the various inputs to the fatigue life prediction are added together to provide an estimate of the overall uncertainty associated with the predictions available from (4).
