Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is to investigate the injection of gases or liquids into the continuous phase of a centrifugal contactor through narrow circumferential slots <250 wide. Under terrestrial gravity narrow slots are prolific sources of small bubbles. The enhanced acceleration imposed in a rotor should improve slot operation still further and thereby increase the operating intensity. The research will investigate the bubble/droplet growth processes and the swarm behaviour of the bubble plume. In particular the Taylor instability of the nozzle jet will be examined using advanced methods of photographic observations and analysis. The findings will complement current contactor research, providing design data and operating parameters for futuredevelopment.
