Filtration is a widely used unit operation in the chemical, food, brewing and mineral processing industries. There currently exists a lack of understanding of compressibility and its relation to particle properties such as surface forces and scale-up methodologies.Pressure leaf filtration tests will be performed at a number of scales with well characterised suspensions and carefully controlled experimental conditions. The transient local solids concentrations will be measured insitu via continual measurement of electrical conductivity at various heights within the filters during filtration and these related to the known experimental conditions and filtration rate. The results from filtrations with pilot scale equipment will be compared with the leaf test data and the influence of compressibility and surface properties on scale-up evaluated. The results from the experimental research programme will be incorporated into appropriate models to enable more appropriate scale-up methodologies to be developed.
