Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will investigate the use of neural network techniques in the important field of corrosion engineering. This will lead to the development of a system which will be capable of emulating some of the expertise currently gained and used by the experts in the field of corrosion engineering. The system developed will be evaluated in trials, both laboratory and field. Research will take place in several areas. These will include an investigation into the machine representation, the expertise of specialist corrosion engineers, the collation and interpretation of corrosion data as training and test data for a neural network, the development of techniques for interpreting and processing numeric and non-numeric data for neural network use and an investigation into techniques for engineering neural networks in this particular problem domain. The two RAs although having expertise in their own areas will cooperate extensively. The RA in the corrosion field will be responsible for determining the data requirements, acquiring/collating the data and evaluating the system during development. The RA in the computation field will be concerned with all aspects of mapping neural networks onto the problem domain.
