Summary on Grant Application Form
Previous work by the applicants led to the development of the principles of an ultrasonic testing system which was successful in detecting major voids or failures in embedded pre-stressing components in concrete. The principles of the system are to use digital filtering to separate the ultrasonic response into discrete frequency bands so that the signals corresponding to different wavelengths can be identified and compared. The present proposal will take this work further by working with a range of frequencies up to 1MHz, and the developing techniques for reassembling the frequency filtered signals back in the time domain and recovering position/depth information not previously obtained. The new system will be developed into a scanning prototype coupled with this magnetic imaging system being researched separately by the applicants, and the capabilities of the combined approach evaluated fully.
