Summary on Grant Application Form
As reactive distillation becomes more widely used as a production technology there is a need for a general study of the controllability and operability of such columns. This is a previously unexplored area of chemical engineering. The proposed research seeks to provide a wide ranging systematic study of several classes of reaction systems using an already existing dynamic simulator for reactive distillation columns. The work should lead to a fundamental understanding of the influence of chemical reactions on the control and operability of such columns and enable the design of control strategies for such columns to be carried out in concert with the column design. Specifically, two control structures will be studied - conventional SISO and MIMO control, and nonlinear input/output model based control using neural networks in association with mechanistic models. Consideration will also be given to the development of strategies for the safe operation of highly exothermic reactive distillation processes.
