Summary on Grant Application Form
The nonlinear, coupled, governing equations for fluid and structural wave motion in a flexible porous medium exposed to a very high amplitude sound field will be formulated. These will include thermal and viscous boundary layer effects as well as flow-resistive and structural nonlinearities. Proper attention will be devoted to structural and flow-resistive anisotropy, to account for two or three dimensional wave propagation. Appropriate methods of solving the governing equations will be examine and implemented numerically. Vibrational testing will be carried out, in vacuo, on suitable samples of porous material to establish the elastic and damping properties and the regimes of nonlinearity. Experimental tests will be carried out at sound pressure levels up to 170dB on air-filled porous media and the results will be compared to computed data.
