To explore the design trade-offs of image codecs suitable for mobile multimedia communication in terms of image quality, bit rate, robustness against channel errors and implementational complexity, as well as to design, simulate, investigate and document a range of robust, fixed-rate image codecs suitable for video telephony.Progress:A range of extremely bandwidth efficient video codecs has been contrived, simulated and studied. Quarter Common Intermediate Format (QCIF) images scanned at 10 frames/s have been encoded using advanced coding techniques at bit rates below 15 kbps, which facilitates video telephony within the bandwidth of conventional mobile radio speech channels, such as for example the 13 kbps GSM full-rate speech channel.Two progress reports and more than a dozen associated publications have been submitted or published in order to disseminate the results. Furthermore, two patent applications have been filed. Work continues in order to further improve the image quality, bit rate, robustness and complexity balance achieved so far. A follow on project is planned with the objectives of amalgamating the image codecs with appropriate source sensitivity matched channel codecs and un-equal protection coded modulation schemes. This will allow us to predict the overall system performance for future multimedia communications.
