Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of the proposed research programme, submitted under the special initiative 'The use of information technology in real engineering systems', is the construction and evaluation of a state-of-the-art technique capable of providing a real-time measurement and display over an extended field of view (several square centimetres). The technique enables velocity measurements to be displayed in real-time on a TV monitor by using the most recently available image processing software. The system will be assessed on laboratory test flows. A pulse YAG laser system (supplied by CIT) will then be investigated for unsteady flow applications. The CW and pulsed systems will be compared and assessed for future use on turbomachinery test rigs. Successful demonstration of this technique will provide Cranfield, the UK and Europe with a unique facility for making real-time velocity measurements over an extended field of view and thus maintain its lead at the forefront of optical instrumentation for turbomachinery research.
