Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of the proposed programme of work is essentially two-fold. Firstly, we intend to develop a general Large Eddy Simulation (LES) code that is capable of running on a parallel computer, and secondly, we will demonstrate the capabilities of this code by investigating the flow around a ground mounted three dimensional obstacle. Such a situation has substantial applications to the flow around buildings and vehicles. Current computation methods have severe shortcomings for such a situation, but recent work in Japan and Europe has indicated that LES will become a viable tool for investigations of such flows in the near future. In order to investigate the applicability of the LES method to this problem a small amount of experimental work will also be required for comparison purposes with the computational results. The parallisation development work will be carried out on the Daresbury Hypercube, but the simulation will be done on both this machine and the Cray at RAL. This will therefore provide a very useful test case for comparison.
