Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme deals with the theory and software implementation of an adaptive remeshing and refinement scheme applicable to the transient simulation of semiconductor power devices. A consistent formulation of the discretised semiconductor drift-diffusion equations will be developed emphasising the accurate resolution of critical quantities such as the space-charge density. This will be supplemented by a reliable error estimation method and a consistent means of interpolating the solution variables onto the updated mesh during the transient simulation. In addition, geometrical factors affecting the generation and refinement of non-structured meshes will be analysed and the conclusions reflected in the developed algorithms. The resulting software will be validated at each stage of development by making use of patch tests and power semiconductor examples. Finally, simulation will be carried out which cover the operation of power devices in realistic circuits. The techniques developed will be of use in the computer aided analysis and design of the next generation of power devices.
