Gas-liquid two-phase crossflow ultrafiltration, proposed by the applicant, has proved to be a simple and effective method to overcome concentration polarisation and membrane fouling. By injecting air into the feed, the permeate flux and rejection ratio can be increased considerably. The damaging effect on the proteins from the gas bubbles is only significant at higher gas flowrates, with this damage mainly occurring when the gas bubbles or slugs burst and detach from the liquid phase.Following the feasibility study, it is intended to investigate the following aspects related to this technique: (a) Control of the bubble burst using a specially designed gas-liquid separator to mimimise both the damaging effect from bubbles to an acceptable level and the risk of foaming. (b) Optimisation of the operating conditions. (c) Study of the detailed mechanism of this enhancement. (d) Influence of oxygen concentration in the gas stream. (e) Operation with flat sheet and hollow fibre membrane modules.The following achievements are expected through this project: (i) ability to minimise and control the shear associated with bubble burse, (ii) ability to predict the performance of the two-phase flow operation, (iii) better understanding of the mechanisms, (iv) identification of the applicability of this method.
