The trend in wind turbine design is towards larger and more lightweight machines. Both of these trends cause the drive-train to become more resonant which strongly increases the transient loads on the drive-train components, such as the gearbox, thereby reducing the fatigue life of their components. The dynamic characteristics of the drive-train are dependent on the dynamics of the drive-train components and generator, the rotor and control system. An integrated approach to the rotor, drive-train and control system (referred to here on the power-train) is required is poor dynamic characteristics are to be avoided. It is the purpose of this proposal to develop an integrated design approach for the power-train. The proposal would address this problem as follows. The dependence of performance on the wind-turbine configuration is to be determined. The extent to which the dynamics of the drive-train can be improved by hardware and software means is to be assessed. The combinations of the above factors, which permit good dynamic characteristics to be attained for the drive-train, are to be identified and a systematic procedure for the design fo the corresponding power-trains developed. Site data and technical advice will be supplied in support of the proposal by several wind turbine manufacturers.
