The mixing performance of mechanically agitated, boiling reactors will be determined and related to the mechanical energy dissipation in the vessel. Since power transmission from the impeller is more effective while vapour is being generated than with similar volumes of sparged gas, significant differences in performance are expected. Although such process operationsare not uncommon, it is believed that this proposal comes from the only group studying the relevant phenomena.The project will first establish the point at which the presence of inert components in the vapour changes the energy transfer mechanisms from a vapour controlled to a gas controlled regime, and assess whether similar limits apply to all the available impellers. Two phase mass transfer (absorption and desorption) and liquid phase homogenisation will be measured in boiling conditions and the results compared with performance in comparable gassed conditions. A start will also be made on developing a numerical simulation of the transfer processes involved when mixtures of vapour and inert gas form the bubbles in a boiling system.
