The proposed research is the development and application of approximate, analytical techniques for the calculation of batch and continuous distillation of non-ideal mixtures. Initial work will focus on non-ideal binary systems. The technique to be developed is based upon piece-wise continuous fittings of VLE data by two functions, with three independent parameters. After establishing an efficient and reliable fitting procedure, design equations, analogous to those which apply when relative volatility is constant, will be developed. Next, the techniques will be applied to binary batch distillation. We shall then explore extension to multicomponent continuous distillation, starting with the ternary case. We intend to apply our analytical techniques to coupled columns, which would otherwise be computationally expensive to simulate. Finally, we also hope to explore: four- or more -component distillation, both batch and continuous; the dynamics of continuous distillation for non-ideal mixtures; application to other counter-current staged operations.
