The project aims to produce and develop a series of heterogeneous catalysts for the production and separation of single enantiomers of chiral sulphoxides, diols and epoxides formed by the selective oxidation of prochiral thioethers and alkenes. The programme has 3 stages (1) Preparation and characterisation of mono- and bi-nuclear chiral complexes of VIV, AgI and PdII, metal ions known to be active in oxidation catalysts. (2) Dispersion of the prepared complexes on silica and montmorillonite clay supports to form the heterogeneous oxidation catalysts. These will be characterised by elemental analysis and spectroscopic, temperature programmed and diffraction techniques. (3) These materials will be tested as catalysts for the selective oxidation of thioethers and alkenes. Variation in reactor testing conditions and the catalyst nature will be examined to maximise optical yields and overall efficiency, and the results of these variations along with specific labelling experiments will be used to determine the reaction mechanisms.
