Summary on Grant Application Form
Concrete prism specimens of various controlled alkali levels will be made from cements of systematically varied C3A content and a number of lithologically varied UK aggregates of known susceptibility to ASR (viz chert/flint, siltstone silicified limestone, greywacke and strained granite). Expansions will be monitored over 1 year at 38C and 21/2 years at 20C during exposture tests in saline and non-saline aqueous environments. Detailed analysis of the exposed speciments will be performed by petrographic techniques, SEM/EDXA and complementary methods to elucidate the role of NaC1 in exacerbating ASR expansion under tertain conditions. To assess whether phenomena observed in the laboratory tests are representative of effects of longer field exposure, concrete cores taken from selected regions of ASR - affected structures will be examined as received and after exposure to saline conditions in the laboratory. The results will provide a basis from which to assess the adequacy of existing and proposed specification measures aimed at minimising the risk of ASR in UK concretes which may be exposed to saline environments.
