An iterative algorithm will be developed in which an initially-connected finite element mesh may develop fractures and separations, governed by a viscoelastic fracture initialisation and growth model, and the resulting bodies interact dynamically as in the discrete element method. The program will be used to model an unsupported roof situation in a coal mine at deep level.Plastic deformation of the rock mass will be incorporated, and the program will be modified for efficient operation on a transputer-architecture computer.
