Summary on Grant Application Form
To demonstrate the feasibility of using active FSS to enable the effective aperture dimensions and beamwidth of a microwave antenna to be varied. To construct as demonstrators waveguide horns incorporating active FSS.To identify active FSS designs best suited to this application.Progress:A waveguide horn which can be electronically switched between two fixed beamwidths has been manufactured and successfully tested. This consisted of an H-plane sectoral horn with an inside FSS wall of dipole elements in theE-plane. When adjacent dipoles in the direction of the E-field are connected together with diodes it is possible to switch the FSS configuration between an ordinary dipole array (when the diodes are reverse biased) and an array of conducting strips (when the diodes are forward biased). The FSS may be designed to have the dipole array resonate (and thus have a transmission null) at the same frequency where the array of conducting strips is almost transparent. Thus the inner wall can be converted from being transparent (when the horn behaves as though the inner wall were absent) to being opaque (when the inner FSS wall reduces the horn's effective transmitting aperture thereby increasing its beamwidth). These results have now been published [1]. [1] B. Philips, E.A. Parker and R.J. Langley : Active FSS in an experimental horn antenna switchable between two beamwidths , Electronics Letters, Vol. 31, pp.1-2, January 5, 1995.
