Summary on Grant Application Form
This programme aims to implement a contemporary well-documented model of the human peripheral hearing system which will operate in real-time. A particular feature of the model is its inherently parallel nature. It has been shown previously that no standard sequential processing technique will enable real-time operation of the model. It is therefore proposed that a parallel implementation based around transputers to be used to accelerate the processing. Such a real-time model will enable:a) the development of a new generation of real-time visual feedback system for speech and singing development work; b) immediate assessment of speech synthesis systems; c) the development of new input stages for speech recognition systems; d) a re-assessment of the relative importance of already identified acoustic cues presented to the brain; e) the development of more 'natural' monaural and binaural heading aids, and f) further investigations of the causes of hearing loss based on a more 'natural' analysis.
