Summary on Grant Application Form
To devise a new method of emulsion production, which is potentially superior in all respects to existing methods. The proposed research will measure and model the influence of the fundamental factors which control the quality and reproducibility of the emulsion formed by forcing the oil phase through a well defined porous media causing droplets to form on the aqueous-side of the membrane which are detached to form the emulsion. The kinetics of droplet detachment and dispersion into the continuous phase is aided by operating in a crossflow mode. The information gained from microscale experimental observations of droplet formation at the membrane-continuous phase interface using a high speed video camera coupled with knowledge of physicochemical characteristics of the liquid phases will be used to design and then test a continuous pilot-scale membrane unit.
