Summary on Grant Application Form
We will develop and validate a computational model on the behaviour of multidirectional composite laminate under thermal stress using a combined experimental and theoretical/computational approach to the modelling. The so-called free edge problem will be specifically addressed. Advanced experimental mechanics techniques will be utilised to study the effects at lamina sub-lamina levels, (referred to in this context as micro-mechanics). The modelling will aim at the development of a three dimensional computational benchmark based on new robust finite element formulations for the thermomechanical behaviour of layered solids. The experimental programme will consider volume usage CFRP materials, comprising at least one thermoplastic and two thermosetting matrices. It is proposed that a staged approach be adopted, with a commitment in the first instance to only two man-years. These would be primarily devoted to the modelling aspects but would include an element of preparation for the experimental validation work that would run in tandem with the extension of the modelling in a second phase.
