|
The successful development of load bearing articulating implants for the younger patient requires a new approach to address the fundamental problems associated with the mechanical and biological incompatibility between metal components and host bone. Innovative approach involving the design of composite components directly from a performance specification has been developed for critical aerospace applications; furthermore the manufacturing techniques are now available to fabricate composites with selective reinforcement to satisfy the performance requirements including incorporation of integrated bioactive surfaces. The case for support describes a research programme to develop to the prototype stage a novel composite hip implant having functionally gradient properties to satisfy the clinical performance requirement. The principles developed may find future application for the development of other implants, particularly for small more highly stressed applications for which the use of accurate design margins is essential.
