A family of molecular digital devices with ionic input and photon output which perform pass(YES), NOT, AND and OR logic functions will be designed, synthesised and evaluated. We have recently made a preliminary set. This will be generalised with examples which operate with various ionic inputs and with several output colours. We will build molecular analog devices based on photoionics which mimic the action of ion selective electrodes in responding to ion concentration over a wide range. Our first effort which demonstrates a quasilinear fluorescent response to protons over a pH range of ca 10 units will be consolidated by appending the set of photo-functional modules onto a short chain polymer. This would then permit real space monitoring of wide amplitude pH fluctuations. Extensions to wide range monitoring of calcium ions should follow similarly. Molecular photoionic devices with input-output characteristics of various shapes will be constructed. These characteristic curves will be tuned by exploiting simple electronic effects of substituents and by using hydrophobic effects to alter the location of the device in an ionic gradient. All of these devices are second generation systems which arise naturally from the design principle of fluorescent PET (photoinduced electron transfer) sensors for ions which we have developed previously. The present programme draws on the disciplines of photophysics and supramolecular chemistry.
