Summary on Grant Application Form
The laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) system requested in this proposal will complement existing flow measurement techniques already being used in the Department to characterise the haemodynamics of cardiovascular devices and will provide a standard against which the other techniques can be compared. The LDA system will be used immediately to quantify the effects that vessel geometry, wall compliance and blood rheology have on the nature of the flow, in terms of those haemodynamic parameters thought to have a bearing on the long-term performance if these implants in vivo. As it is capable of resolving two components of flow velocity, the LDA system will also be used to characterise flows in which blood cells (platelets) are exposed to physiological shear stresses in vitro. The results of these studies will provide important design criteria for future blood-contacting devices.
