The aim is to apply an advanced wide bandwidth ultrasonic spectrometer to study flocculation states in industrially relevant colloids at high solids concentration. This will include studies of the relationship, between phenomena measurable by ultrasound and measures of floc structure, such as fractal dimension. The spectrometer is fast acting and can be used to study reacting mixtures; we will use it to study sol-gel transitions, followed by reversal where appropriate, achieved by chemical intervention and/or shear thinning. Theoretical formulations of ultrasound propagation in colloids require scattering models which are incorporated into a software package at Keele. These models require very many physical and thermal constants for the dispersed and continuous phases which may not be available, or too expensive to measure. We intend to study the problem of theoretical modelling of ultrasonic wave interactions with colloids for which only sparse physical data are available. We aim to develop a 'reasonable estimate' technique that could form the basis for a particle size/volume fraction measurement system. Finally we hope to increase the awareness of the chemistry/chemical engineering community to the power and comparative cheapness of advanced ultrasonic spectrometry for the study of colloids.
