Summary on Grant Application Form |
The purpose of research is to study the behaviour of short cracks, and to elucidate the mechanisms controlling their growth under fatigue. We shall use time-resolved acoustic microscopy to measure the subsurface geometry of the cracks, and in particular to determine the depth of the crack tip. We shall study short cracks in 2024 aluminium alloy and also in single crystals of SRR99 nickel-based superalloy.
