Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the programme is to continue to grow crystals of the various superconducting oxide compounds and to supply these, and specimens prepared from them, to the UK community for fundamental research. One of the major proposed developments is to extend our existing programme into the growth and characterisation of thallium-containing crystals, which will require the establishment of a dedicated handling and growth facility. In order to produce larger crystals of other oxide systems, it is proposed to set up large scale furnaces to enable growth from bigger crucibles; a complementary project of top seeded solution growth will be conducted at Oxford. Characterisation and phase diagram studies will continue to provide vital information on the growth parameters, prevailing detailed microstructure, and underlying growth mechanisms.
