Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to build a low temperature magnetic force microscope (MFM) to examine the flux lattice of high tc superconductors. The static lattice has already been imaged using a decoration technique but we see the MFM as providing the following additional information: (1) state of order ie flux crystal versus flux glass at different temperature and fields; (2) effect of crystal twins, eg in YBCO, as pinning centres in static and dynamic structures; (3) comparison between different flux lattice states with variation of orientation with respect to crystal structure: this is available since we can make both c-axis and a-axis YBCO thin films by laser ablation. Thin film multilayers and single crystals also will be examined. Other materials include Bi cuprates and cubic bisuthates; (4) evidence for flux disc slippage.
