Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose an innovative program of work on diamond fibres and diamond fibre composites. Such fibres offer a unique, and effective, route to exploiting many of the highly desirable physical and mechanical properties of diamond films. Specifically we propose to produce diamond fibres by coating non-metallic fibres and metal wires with diamond using chemical vapour deposition techniques. Natural extensions of this work could include the fabrication of hollow diamond fibres, diamond rods and even diamond springs. A parallel program will be devoted to consolidation of diamond fibres in a metal matrix composite and to measurement of the properties of the resulting diamond fibre/metal matrix composites.
