The research objectives will be (1) to self-assemble on a gold surface a vectorial electron shuttle, ie a molecular device capable of efficient unidirectional electron transport through identical redox sites. The electrochemical gradient driving the unidirectional electron flow could be created by the gradual variation in environments (A, B, C, D, E) to which the identical redox sites are exposed. This type of molecular electronic device could find important applications in artificial photosynthetic schemes or electrocatalysis and (2) capitalise upon our recent observation that the design logic employed in the self-assembly of our original molecular shuttle can be inverted such that the paraquat units are located in the thread of the dumbell component with the hydroquinol rings in the macrocyclic component of the [2] rotaxane. The self-assembly of this particular type of molecular shuttle is an 'intelligent' process. We now wish to construct molecular shuttles of the type that have one of their two paraquat binding sites replaced by another bipyridinium unit with a different reduction potential such that it might be possible to control them electromechanically.
