Summary on Grant Application Form
The primary emphasis will be on the structure and electronic properties of nitrides of general formula A3MN3, where both A and M can derive from different sub-blocks of the Periodic Table. We will synthesise nitrides with M = A13+, Ln3+, Co3+ and Ti3+ since we have recently established that these ions have suitable ionic radii/tolerance factors for a structure of this type. We will extend the study to include nitrides with magnetic ions on both A2+ and M3+ sites, most notably Eu2+ and Ln3+, respectively, so as to probe the nature of magnetic interactions. We will also utilize our new synthetic routes for both alkali, and alkaline earth substitutions, in an attempt to introduce 'holes' in the electronically active constituents.
