|
The programme aims to select, and then experimentally verify by sintering studies, binder systems for a range of transition metal carbides and borides. There are a number of potentially useful carbide/boride combinations which have not been explored due primarily to the unsuitability of the binders used. The experimental programme is based on the theoretical studies performed by the principal applicant during a recent postgraduate research programme. Characterisation of the material will be conducted at selected stages in the processing routes, including mechanical property evaluation. Selected compositions, having the requisite fine grain microstructures will be subject to superplastic testing and possibly shape forming.
