Summary on Grant Application Form
The project would firstly establish values of the various parameters required to apply the predictive models of DB to the duplex stainless steels. This will involve measurements of the relationships between flow stress and strain rate over appropriate temperature ranges, surface roughness, the volume fraction of and phases as a function of temperature, and grain size as a function of temperature and time. Other parameters including diffusivity, shear modulus, surface energy will be obtained from the literature. Studies would then be made to establish the effect of temperature, pressure, surface roughness on the time to produce a sound bond. Bond quality would be assessed on the basis of optical metallography, lap shear strength measurement and SEM examination of the lap shear failure. The model would be used initially to predict bonding times, and then for a comparison of prediction with actual bonding times. Significant differences would require a re-evaluation of the assumptions on which the model was based. The combination of experiment and prediction would enable optimum bonding conditions and dominant bonding mechanisms to be established. The final stage of the work would examine the feasibility of producing simple shapes in microduplex stainless steels by DB/SPF.
