It is proposed to grow diamond like films (a) by deposition at room temperature from a CH4/Arr.f. plasma and (b) by deposition via a carbon plasma beam formed from a cathodic vacuum arc. There is a basic scientific need to understand in a more quantitative manner than at present the way in which the choice of deposition conditions affects the microstructure of these films, and how this in turn relates to the macroscopic optical and electronic properties of the films. In order to characterise their chemistry and microstructure, the thin films will be examined using parallel electron energy loss spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy in conjunction with conventional bright field, dark field and electron diffraction techniques. These observations will be correlated with results from x-ray analysis of the thin films and with the optical and electronic properties of the thin films. In this way, a more detailed picture than is available at present will emerge on the relationship between film deposition conditions, microstructure and optoelectronic properties.
