The physical cause of the superconductivity in perovskite systems remains a theoretical mystery. One of the major stumbling blocks is the Hubbard model, which seems a physically reasonable starting point for the system but has proven immensely difficult to solve analytically. The only known solutions are restricted to one dimension and involve a subtle phenomenon known as 'spin-charge separation'; a situation where the very electrons themselves appear to split into charge-only and spin-only constituents. Until recently, the only mathematical technique which could be brought to bear was the Bethe Ansatz, a quite formidable prospect. It is proposed to study another much lesser technique, much akin to the Jordon-Wigner transformation, which allows an analytical treatment for more sophisticated one dimensional models; models which allow particles to orbit each other as they do in two dimensions. The technique provides physical interpretation into the phenomenon and allows some practical analytical calculations to be addressed. We include a description of this technique in the proposal and suggest how it might be used, in conjunction with the computer, to study the Huddbard model.
