Summary on Grant Application Form
The exciting new technique of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has been used successfully to fabricate a number of state-of-the-art thin film materials eg high Tc superconductors, ferroelectrics etc. This programme is directed at growth of nanometre scale thin films of intrinsic and doped ceria and zirconia for potential application in solid oxide fuel cells. The thin film structures are to be analysed in-situ by AES, XPS and RHEED techniques. In addition, the ablation plume composition will be investigated using energy/mass analysis. The monitoring and control of plume constituents will enable the film composition and structure to be closely tailored. The nanometre dimensions of these deposited structures demand the incorporation of a unique velocity selector which will dramatically reduce particulate deposition at the film surface/interface region. The thin electrolyte thin films are to be characterised using electrical and dielectric measurements, and their behaviour under sustained high ionic fluxes will be evaluated.
